Culture

Provence, without its festivals, cultural events, fine dining and markets would not really be Provence!

Over the summer, it is one cultural event after another. They are particularly enjoyable under a starry summer sky:

  • Avignon theatre festival, les Chorégies d’Orange (choir), Vaison-la-Romaine dance festival, ’Aix en Provence opera festival,
  • Les Festival du rire in Oppède, Musical nights in Luberon, le Festival de Gordes, APTA JULIA festival, Lacoste festival, Théâtre avec les Tréteaux in Lagnes…

And there are plenty of museums too:

  • Corkscrew and truffle museums in Ménerbes
  • Lavender museum in Coustellet (Maubec)
  • Santon en Provence museum in Cavaillon
  • Pétrarque, speleology, history museums in Fontaine de Vaucluse,
  • Glass and stained glass museum, Moulin des Bouillons museum in Gordes
  • Campredon in l’Isle sur la Sorgue…

In Provence, there is always an excuse to celebrate: cherry (Vénasque), strawberry (Carpentras), melon (Cavaillon), wine, old trades, gastronomy… there are many village celebrations over the summer.

Open air markets are an institution in Provence! Our local Sunday morning market in Coustellet set up by the Parc naturel Régional du Luberon is particularly popular as is the Velleron market (about 20 kms away) which takes place every evening. The award winning Apt Saturday morning market is also not to be missed.
